Player Ranking

888 Backgammon operates according to the FIBS (First Internet Backgammon Server) system. This assigns a 1500 ranking to any new player who logs in for the first time. Winning a single or series of games will increase a player’s ranking points while losing will reduce them. FIBS allows players to evaluate themselves against other players.

The FIBS points system is based on:

  1. Length of a game
  2. Experience of the player
  3. Difference in ranking between the players.

If you play an opponent of equal rank, the FIBS system will add 2 points to your ranking if you win or deduct 2 points if you lose. If you beat a player who is ranked higher than you, you get more points than if you beat someone who is ranked lower than you. Similarly, if you lose to someone who is ranked lower than you, you lose more points than if you lost to a player who is ranked higher than you.

For example, let’s assume that you are ranked 1500 and play somebody ranked 1925 in a 7 point one-on-one game. If you lose, 2.28 points are deducted. If you win, 8.31 points are added.

When you use the filter in the Table Chart you can select players according to their ranking. This way you will find people at your own level. Alternatively you can decide to play against more experienced players, to try to improve your ranking.

You’ll find over time that the points you gain for winning games is roughly equal to the points you drop for losing games. This shows that your ranking number accurately indicates your ability level.

888 Backgammon Ranking Legend:

  • A new member is represented in gray before he starts accumulating rank.
  • Out of courtesy to members with a low ranking of 1400 points or under, we represent them as having *1400 points. These members need to win a certain number of games in order to pass the 1400 points category.
